Walmart is experimenting with a new "best-of-both worlds" approach to the checkout process that offers the speed and convenience of cashierless checkout, but with a more personalized experience. Walmart employees will "float" in the checkout area, directing shoppers to open lanes and providing assistance when needed. It will be very interesting to see how this plays out on a larger scale, as they test it in their Fayetteville Supercenter.
